A Question for the Crafters

I had a discussion with a linkshell friend of mine about charging for crafting services. He has spent a lot of time and resources into getting 100+2 (or 3) Woodworking and capping all other crafts at 60, and thought it was only fair that people pay him for his services for the effort he has put into the craft. And because he generally doesn’t have all that much gil these days, he thinks this is partly because no one offers to pay him for helping them.

I have tried to do some reading on the matter, and although I do not charge myself, I have received donations for crafting for others. Some crafters tend to charge an arbitrary amount of gil depending on the outcome of the synth, I told my friend that he could look into charging a flat fee of 10%, which he thought sounded fair. Say you craft someone a high quality elemental staff, which goes for 500-600,000 gil where I come from, he would net 50,000 gil for the job. Now, if he were to get a normal Thunder Staff instead, he would only net about 800 gil for the job (and the client would bear the losses for the actual material costs as you lose like 150,000 gil per normal quality synth on staves).

So, do you charge for your services, or do you hope that people will donate?

Scarlet Ribbon

Just yesterday I was hired to make a Noble’s Ribbon, a synthesis that should give me a tier three chance at HQ as I’m 38 levels above the synth cap. It was new moon and I the client had all the materials up front. I did a total of 14 attempts, and only got one Noble’s Ribbon, the rest were Scarlet Ribbons which goes for the same on the auction house but is next to useless other than that.

My linkshell friend that I had the discussion with earlier that day told me that people tend not to pay for the services, but the client I had gave me all of the scarlet ribbons as a thank you for helping him. What a nice guy! (^^=)

I’ve often found myself wanting to approch a crafter and ask them to make me something, but I’ve always been weary about the costs. I think it’s because of the price on the AH. I just assume the crafter is going to charge me that much.

Don’t get me wrong though, even if they offered to do it for me for free, I would still give them some type of compenstion for the work.

I think the 10% deal is a very nice sounding deal.

p.s. Just noticed you are on the Unicorn server as well :D. Don’t normally see to many of us lol

On alexander the rule is a 10% commission on synths, and if you synth an big ticket HQ (Dusk Gloves +1, Dalm -1, Heca cap -1, etc) you synth the person an NQ and sell the HQ or they pay you an extra fee for the HQ. Its a simple 10% fee on anything else.

@dantpup:
I can understand the desire to charge more for a HQ, but seeing how the client bears the risk of losing the materials in case of a broken synthesis, I think it’s only fair that you stick to a simple fee. 10% can net you a decent amount of gil, or just some pocket gil in pocket change if you fail to HQ.

I don’t ask people to craft things for me that are big ticket items, only things that I can’t find on the AH and need for a quest or something. (PUP job related quests are notorious.)

Or, rarely, to have something signed by a friend. (NQ Flute, Aqua Ring, etc) A friend actually gave me a signed Noble’s Ribbon as a gift before quitting.

I never charge friends or LS members for a synth. I just look at it as helping a fellow member, for general synth requests though i take donations, not a set fee. If a HQ is synth’d then the crafter usually keeps it and provides the client with a NQ version out of their own pocket (cost of this should be more than recovered from sale of HQ)

*scratches cheek* I seemed to have done a good job hiding my particular crafting levels. That, or folks forget a lot. *lol* On the occasion that I do craft something for a friend, I usually give death threats if they try to pay me.
(^_^)

I think it’s a good idea to make an arrangement before crafting with what to do it you do HQ their item. I’d imagine if someone was understanding and was honestly gonna USE the HQed item, they shouldn’t have a problem giving you an additional payment or whatever for it.

If they do have a problem with it and don’t want to give you an additional reward for HQing something, they’re out to make money off you – drop it like a hawt potat. (=p)
