The Letter
As I woke up this morning, I could hear birds chirping outside. It was a warm summer day, and the sun was shining through the window, stroking me gently on the face. I purrred with joy as I welcomed a new day. Outside there was a calming breeze, and not a single cloud obscured the deep serene that seemed to go on forever. The fresh flowers I had picked up on my way home yesterday had filled the room with a pleasant scent. Water was streaming from the fountain just behind the folding screen, a sound that soothes your soul and brings tranquility to the mind.
I got up, still very drowsy after having just gotten home from a trip to Kazham. The floor was still a bit cold, but I didn’t mind. I looked through my wardrobe, and got out of my pajamas and into my Cleric’s Briault before I made my way over to the water casket by the fountain. The water felt refreshing, as Windurst has the purest water in Vana’diel—only beaten by the rivers outside Kazham mind you.
By now it had gotten quite busy outside my house, with people hustling to work. I could hear youngsters preparing for school, some more eager than others. I suppose the classes in Windurst Waters were about to begin, but the children still showed no sign of being worried about getting there too late.
My moogle knocked on the door and entered as I was tending my hair. Good morning, kupo,
she said, smiling. Did you sleep well, master?
I turned around, and waved. My hair was still a mess after sleeping, so I tried to hide my face. Good morning, Moogle,
I answered while blushing. Moogle flew over to the desk, dropping off some groceries and mackerels she had bought at the store. I just continued to try to get my messy hair in order, and didn’t pay much attention to her. Say…
Moogle said. Hmm?
I replied, not really listening. Moogle came closer to me, now looking over my shoulder and at my face in the mirror. Moogle tapped me on the shoulder with her pompom, smiling secretly.
What?
I blurted out, clearly a bit impatient. Well, you see, there is this letter for you today…
she continued. I turned around and looked at the moogle intrigued, almost dying to know if it really could be true—.
Is it him?
I asked my moogle, almost thrilled by the mere thought of finally receiving a word from my beloved Zelthas. Moogle didn’t say anything, but carefully passed the envelope to me. The envelope was addressed to Kimiko the Furball of Windurst Woods. I opened the envelope slowly, making sure I wouldn’t rip anything. The letter opened with these words:
Dear sweet Kimiko,
It’s been a very long time since I’ve written you, my love, and for that I apologize. My adventures away from Vana’diel have taken me to places that words can’t even describe.
It is really him,
I whispered. I could feel my face get warm, as my eyes brimmed over with tears. Finally… finally,
I continued. I was overjoyed, as I had finally received a letter from the love of my life, whom I haven’t seen in a long long time. Time stopped, as I carefully read through his letter, reading about his adventures. I felt so happy—yet so lonely.
